  • I could show more original photos of Jonas Wood at the DMA, or I could repeat the imagery of this spectacularly judgmental dog. I stand by my choice.

  • Jonas Wood, Bullets, 2007. “The sports thing is funny. A lot of people think my work on the subject is based on being a super sports fan, because I’m from Boston or because I make these nostalgic pictures, but really the whole sports theme is just a vehicle for practicing portraiture.” Basketball has become an iconic subject for Wood alongside the prosaic plants. By depicting two basketball players, Woods displays the fact that sport never ages. Indeed, the Baltimore Bullets were an NBA franchise between 1963 and 1973, then named Washington Bullets and finally Washington Wizards. #jonaswood #wood #basket #basketball #players #nba #bullets #canvas #painting #art #artist #artwork #modern #contemporary #modernart #contemporaryart #knowledge #quotidiart

  • Every artist faces the path of finding her/his style, and in my opinion painters are the ones that have the biggest challenge. The variables are limited, as figurative or abstract, the pallet, the base, the theme and the technique. And as an old technique, it seems everything was done already. Jonas Wood, who has a memorable exhibition ongoing at @gagosian , achieved a uniqueness in the issues a figurative painting demands. F.e , shadows and volumes are done with one-color block that has a contour or a print with traces or point. In the prints and contours, he trembles the brush to make little quakes or a high-relief. It creates an effect as if the image was a displacement of the reality - in fact, it is. Wood's pallet changes according to the work, but his rule is: living colours. And behind themes that seem banal are contradictions, intertextuality and metalanguage, as if he uses the painting codes and its relations to build an explanation of the painting as a language. His domain of the painting issues is a great example of how the use of the variables make difference when we talk about style.

Jonas Wood
Large shelf still life, 2018
Offset lithograph, 61x61 cm

⠀⠀⠀
Jonas Wood (b.1977)

  • Jonas Wood, Kitchen on Palms, 2008.

An important proponent of contemporary figurative painting, Jonas Wood creates exquisitely detailed visions of the everyday world. This is an archetypal Wood canvas as it brings together his signature themes and planar style in a tightly conceived image of a foliage-rich household.
The focal point of the work is a grouping of potted plants and ceramic vessels which figure prominently into Wood’s oeuvre. Inspired stylistically by the California paintings of David Hockney, Wood updates the former’s cool compositions with a near-Cubist sensibility.
By combining different points of perspective into one illusionary amalgam, Wood is able to create an undulating, crystalline vision of domesticity. However, instead of throwing the composition into disarray, the disjointed appropriation comes together under Wood’s masterful arrangement.

  • “I was painting for me, and I knew that I didn’t want to paint for the collector audience. I wanted to paint for me. I love collectors. But I knew that was a trap.” Jonas Wood in an interview with @artnet as he readied for his exhibition @dallasmuseumart and his current show @gagosian in New York. Wood creates large-scale paintings that captivate the viewer and draw you into another world. Each painting felt like a space I had seen before but the way Wood recreated that space made me never want to look away. .
.
While observing other viewers I found that every person was lingering in front the works longer than one usually expects. Each person engaged with the pieces and that is the greatest gift an artist can provide the viewer is to be so enthralled by a work of art that you leave your own reality if only for a brief second. Thank you @jonasbrwood for an amazing show.

  • Have you checked out Jonas Wood’s exhibition at @gagosian yet? If not, you have until July 19th to see it. What I enjoy most about Wood’s work is his rich coloring and heavy use of patterns. One of my favorite pieces in the show is “Still Life with Panels,” 2018, which features a room full of wooden panels as well as plants. I like the variation in texture that he created for each plant. This painting comes from a series where he used both photography and collage. He would project the photograph, draw it and then paint it.

Landscape painting is one of the genres that has particularly strong roots in the past.

Contemporary artists continue to be inspired by the majesty and mystery of nature, but the very notion of a landscape evolved greatly, becoming a subject for experimentation both in the figurative and abstract art. Artists continue to push the limits of the genre and, still a relevant genre in the 21 century, landscape painting is taking new and unexpected turns ranging.

Artists choose landscapes as their subjects for a variety of reasons. In addition to wanting to represent or replicate their obvious beauty, some artists opt to create these depictions to study and explore various aesthetic elements, like light, colour, and texture. Additionally, some artists also use scenes of nature as a way to tell a story, illustrate an idea, or conceptualize a metaphor.
