  • The romance of hospitality design steers 2019 #hdwave honoree @alexandercharlie, but he is seasoned enough to know the courses of such love stories rarely run smoothly. “No project comes without its stresses and pain—and it’s definitely a labor of love,” the designer says. “Upon completion, it’s easy to breathe a sigh of relief and forget the toil that went into creating it, so you find yourself taking on another project thinking it will be a breeze.” At the helm of @ennismore’s interiors practice since 2016, North now spearheads an 18-person team that continues to grow as the visibility of its work gains wider exposure and praise. • Checking in! Just opposite of St Pancras station, US hotel brand @thestandard opened their first outpost this side of the Atlantic. Interior architects @archerhumphryes and designer @shawnhausmandesign revived a brutalist 70s council building and turned it into a vibrant hot-spot with 266 rooms and two street-facing restaurants. All spaces are distinct in style but share references to the decade when the complex was built. Electric colours, soft leather upholstery, plenty of coloured metal tubes, warm woods, a tendency to round shapes and extravagant tile patterns (the one behind the check-in counter is by local artist @lubnachowdhary) channel Camden's character, echoing its wild decades as well as the area's transformation into one of London's modern creative centres. And to top things off, a rooftop restaurant and terrace will open this September.

  • @martinbrudnizki on Le Chardenoux in Paris: "It has just 38 covers, so we wanted to make sure we used the space to its best advantage. We reconfigured the floorplan and introduced a mixture of banquette seating with traditional bistro chairs. The bar was a listed item, so we had to be very mindful when working around it. The introduction of the burgundy color was inspired by the red veins that naturally occur in the marble-fronted bar, helping to tie the restaurant together.
