  • How do you respond to a highly stressful situation or a human predator? Do you stop in your tracks, run away, or fight back? Psychologists identify three key responses—the 3 Fs. Fight, flight, and freeze. Humans share these responses with the animal world. ✨
.
.
We’ve all seen striking NatGeo videos of a buffalo fleeing a lion to escape—a buffalo charging a lion to repel an attack in a life-and-death situation—or the proverbial deer in the headlights. 🐃 🦁 Some animals, like certain species of ducks, even “play dead” and generate a strong physiological response of immobility. 🦆
.
.
A number of clinicians identifies the fourth F: fawn. This F pertains to those of us who default to begging and placating an aggressor—rather than escaping altogether, freezing at a loss of what to do, or returning blows verbally or physically. 🙏🏻
.
.
Simply put, identifying your responses and properly dealing with them may improve your quality of life. ✨ When I began researching this aspect of psychology (as a lay person, I admit), it became obvious that I’m a fawner. 📚 And sometimes I fight—verbally. Yet your response to significant stress may be less obvious, deeper rooted, and thus even more important to clarify.
.
.
For instance, only recently did it dawn on me that my seemingly inherent workaholism and instances of academic overachievement are actually a flight response—in part, an apparent result of a “tiger mom” upbringing. 🎓📚🏙🖥(I am not referring to excessive work by necessity to escape intimate-partner violence or get out of debt.) Having identified this habit of mine, grounding myself to return into the given moment and refocus makes a lot more sense instead of escaping into the perpetual dissatisfaction of perfectionism. 🌿
.
.
What about you? ✨

  • The Knife’s Edge and Goat Rocks Wilderness provided Jill and I with a unique experience last time around.⁣
⁣⁣
⁣In 2015 we were bombarded by fierce wind gusts within an endless abyss of fog that existed in all directions. I heard that there were supposed to be some spectacular views in this special place, but we were simply gifted mystery and wonder in the form of a summer storm.⁣
⁣⁣
⁣It’s been a place we’ve wanted to revisit since our PCT thru-hike, and now, we’re heading back.⁣
⁣⁣
⁣I’ve spent the last several years recounting the harrowing tales of the hikers who had scarring experiences here on the Knife’s Edge in the hours and days before we made our attempt. I’ve relived the frightening and exciting hike we had here whenever I look at our old pictures. I’ve dreamed of the beautiful views and wily mountain goats that others were able to experience.⁣
⁣⁣
⁣Here’s hoping for clear skies this time around. I’ll let you all know how it went!

  • “Don’t be complacent” - me to me⁣
⁣
I always try to convince myself that being comfortable is unacceptable, because forcing myself to take on uncomfortable situations allows me to learn and grow. I did that a few times this weekend, the first being shooting astrophotography for the first time until 4AM (way past my bedtime). And wow, now I know why people stay up so late at night⁣
⁣
If anybody was looking for a sign to do something they’ve always thought about but been afraid to try, here it is! Go out and try that stinky tofu milkshake! Experience that horror movie you’ve been afraid to watch because you’re scared of a sudden heart attack! ⁣
⁣
If you’re reading this far I would like to personally thank you for listening to my thoughts and I hope you have a good day. Thank you for your 2 minutes!

  • Is anybody afraid of China doing this in other countries? Is their violence going to spread???? That’s what I am afraid of 🤭😭 It’s so scary. It seems like we need to boycott their products before they get too violent and powerful,,, which is mostly stuff that are sold in Walmart and Apple lol

  • Golden hour in paradise. 🏔✨⁣
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you’ve read Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, you probably remember how it concludes along the shores of an island off the coast of Norway. I think of this spot as the one they found refuge upon. (Had the novel been a work of a non-fiction of course!) 🦑🛸🌊⁣
