  • At 11 years old, Nagai Caroline, who hopes to be a teacher one day, leaves her home late in the night to get water for her family of 9. On her nightly journey, she encounters fights among children and long lines of others hoping for water, too. Only to find a shallow well often dried up and always dirty. This year, Nagai and her family received a well closer to their home. No longer does Nagai have to fight for access to clean water but can enjoy health, spending time with her family and simply being a child. .

  • Enjoying the art of drinking water from the tap directly which he newly discovered.

But in the meantime, are we teaching our kids to save water as well?!
Yes, one of the most important topics to be shared with the toddlers as we, as a mom are responsible for next generations.
Looking at the water crisis recently in Chennai, India and few other cities, it puts us in situation where we should think what we as a responsible citizen can do to overcome this crisis, before blaming the government and waiting for them to act on it.
Wherever we live, every small gesture or step towards saving water can work for future.

So, I had a talk with my kid about this present scenario in Chennai. And explained him in much simpler way how we can save water and showed him some videos of chennai water crisis. So, thought of sharing with you all too. The more you repeat these things to your toddler and children, the faster they get used to. But, we need to repeat it. That’s how children learn. Yes, whenever needed like if he/ she using the toilet, brushing teeth, taking bath, washing hands, etc.

points I explained to my child are:
- We must use water as much as needed
- We should not left the tap open coz that way we are wasting a lot of water.
Please share some of the tips from your experience with your kid.

  • Issue 11 of the Journal is out TODAY, and we couldn't be more excited. Featuring essays on what food justice really means, whether elitist consumption is the root of environmental evil, and how water conservation undermined adaptation during Cape Town's crisis. Also, new this issue: a visual gallery focused on how iconic images can help us envision (and actually work toward) a better future.

People are struggling to access the quantity and quality of water they need for drinking, cooking, bathing, handwashing, and growing their food.

  • Now, this is what we call creativity for a cause 😄! @nainagoyal22 took the #DayZero challenge, have you? Record yourself or click a photo doing any small thing that can save water and share it with the world to inspire others to participate in the #RaceAgainstDayZero! Also swipe right to see other ways to participate! Don't forget to include the tags #RaceAgainstDayZero and also tag us at @earthsamvarta.
Naina put a smile on everyone's face when she shared through her great humour how a significant amount of water goes into cleaning dishes in our homes! She urges us not only to save water while cleaning dishes but also to truly relish each meal (in essence lick your dishes clean 😋 to reduce the amount of water that would be needed to clean the vessel!) In her post Naina adds how each of us use around 10 Liters of per day just for cleaning dishes! So every small bit that can help save water can help win the #RaceAgainstDayZero.
Pro tip for #savingwater: in hotels and restaurants the dishes come with napkins/tissue papers. While we use napkins for our hands, you can save a lot of water if you also wipe down your dish using the used napkin! Otherwise the napkins are barely used and still end up in trash. How awesome would it be if we saved water too by wiping down the dish using the same napkin!

  • Lately after our first clothes donation drive our team has been discussing the issue of dumping clothes in the dump yards / landfills and removing plastic from our life.

Question here is how do we get away from single use plastic that chokes ground, rivers, lakes everything and anything.

I think the solution is reintroduce old ways of traditional living with modern blend.Kind of mix match culture.I have been constantly in touch with fashion brands and my friends and family from fashion world. And they have been doing things silently in terms of "Sustainable Fashion" but they admit that more things needs to be done not by few but many like minded industry ppl.

These carry bags are one such way of engaging old clothes and make them usable.
I would request my friends and well wishers to let me know from where can I get old clothes to create such bags that will not only solve issue of dumping fabrics in the landfills but also help generate revenue for deserving women who have been trained to stitch but does not have any raw material.

🦠
Now imagine this the reality for your daughter, your son, your mom, dad, grandparents, brothers and your sisters.
💔
We are all brothers and sisters. And some of us could use a hand, or a simple glass of clean water.
💧
That’s why my childhood friend @drtipper founded @drip.society. Their proceeds help bring clean, sustainable water to families and communities less fortunate than ours.
🤝
And you can help by checking out, copping and rocking their pretty dope line of swagged out apparel.
💃🏽
You’ll be seeing more of it around and when you do know that that person is doing something good for someone who can’t do for themselves.
🌍
You don’t have to change who you are, what you do, how you live. And you may not change the whole world for everyone. But you can be a whole world of change for someone. Check out @drip.society. #getyourdripon

  • People across India are facing critical drought conditions and water shortages. As of June 25, 2019, nearly 65 percent of the country’s reservoirs were running dry. One of the worst affected areas has been the west-central state of Maharashtra, where six of the 17 reservoirs are dried out. These images show Puzhal Lake, the primary rain-fed reservoir in Chennai in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. They were acquired on May 31, 2018 (left), and June 19, 2019 (right), by the Operational Land Imager on Landsat 8. Puzhal Lake (also known as Red Hills Lake) is one of four main reservoirs that serves the city of Chennai. In total, the four reservoirs were only at 0.2 percent capacity, as reported on June 21, 2019.
The water shortages are partly caused by low rainfall over the past few months. Chennai has been devoid of rain for nearly 200 days. In 2018, the city experienced one of its weakest northeast monsoon seasons, which runs from October to December and provides a large portion of the area’s annual rainfall. Additionally, the southwest summer monsoon season from around June through September has been delayed across India and unable to deliver substantial rainfall to Chennai yet.Chennai has been struggling to meet water demands for the past few years. The National Institution for Transforming India (a government think tank) reportedChennai, India’s sixth-largest city, was one of 21 cities that could run out of groundwater by 2020. Many news reports state the water shortages are due to low rainfall but also water management. The dry conditions and low rainfall have been a common story across India this June, albeit to a lesser degree than in Chennai. From June 1 to June 26, the country received 36 percent less rainfall compared to the 50-year average. The dry conditions have been further exacerbated by intense heatwaves in May and June, a weather pattern that has been occurring more frequently in recent years.
