  • From their rainforest homeland in the Ecuadorian Amazon, the Waorani rejoice over their triumphant win protecting their ancestral land from oil! “This victory is a dream come true. It means that our future generations can continue to live freely in a healthy and pristine forest, with clean water and pure air. I always wanted to protect these lands for the future generations, as my ancestors did for me! It is the legacy for my grandchildren. This belongs to them!”, says Waorani elder Omanka Enqueri.

Now is the time to build upon the Waorani’s legal precedent! 7 million acres of pristine rainforest, encompassing the territories of seven indigenous nations are still at risk from oil drilling. Sign link in bio to help amplify this victory at this historic moment!

  • Today, Waorani leaders gave a symbolic press conferece outside Ecuador’s first oil well explaining what this historic victory means for the Waorani People and neighbouring indigenous nations across the Ecuadorian Amazon: “The court’s final ruling states very clearly that our territory is our decision and that our forest is not for sale!" said Nemonte Nenquimo Waorani leader. “This is a victory for all indigenous nations that have been manipulated and deceived by the government, and whose rights have been violated. The Government has to listen to us and respect our decisions, and the lives of all Indigenous Peoples in the Amazon.“ Now, let’s build on the Waorani's precedent-setting victory in order to defend 7 million acres more of rainforest under threat from oil extraction in the Ecuadorian Amazon!

  • Breaking: Game-changing win for the Amazon!

The Waorani have defeated the Ecuadorian government on appeal, blocking the sale of 500,000 acres of their ancestral lands from oil drilling. “We have shown the world that life is more important than oil!” said Nemonte Nenquimo, Waorani leader. “And united we can protect our way of life, the Amazon rainforest, and our planet from destruction.” Now’s the time to keep the momentum going, and turn this precedent into a victory for neighboring indigenous nations, who are defending 7 million acres of forest threatened by oil in the Amazon.

  • “Our strength comes from the jaguar and the eternally living forest” - Waorani Elder

This jaguar was recorded by camera traps near a community during the Waorani people's territorial mapping process. The jaguar is one of the most powerful animals in the rainforest; an animal of deep spiritual importance to indigenous peoples, but they were almost hunted to extinction in the Western Amazon. Today, they have made an amazing comeback in more remote, protected indigenous territories. This is why protecting indigenous territories is vital for conservation of wildlife and biodiversity!

  • Today, an indigenous land patrol from the Kofan community of Sinangoe took off on a two-week journey deep into the jungles of the Ecuadorian Amazon to map their territory.

Over the past two years, the Kofan of Sinangoe have been using technology as a tool to protect their land. The mapping process of their territory reflects their knowledge and connection with the land and identifies sacred sites, medicinal plants, animals in danger of extinction, fishing spots, special trees and vines, and more. In this way, indigenous peoples can take control over their lands, through their own cosmovision and reality.
Stay tuned for an exclusive photo-essay upon the return of the Kofan land patrol!

  • The Waorani leave the court house in song after the end of a long day in the appeals hearing during which they faced off with Ecuador's government yet again in order to defend their historic legal victory in protection of 500,000 acres of their rainforest territory from oil drilling.
Ecuador's Ministry of	Environment	took a pro-oil	stance by filing an appeal while an apparent	blunder	sidelined the Ministry	of Energy in court.
We now await a three-judge panel's verdict and stand strong with the Waorani in their urgent struggle to defend their lives, their rights and a forest we all depend upon.

  • “The forest is our home, it’s our territory. Today the judges have to ratify the court verdict. They have to respect our rights. If they fail, it means that the government is continuing to manipulate the judicial system “ - declared Nemonte Nenquimo, Waorani leader, this morning at a press conference outside the courthouse, where leaders of other indigenous nations joined in to support.

Today, we hope that the Ecuadorian judicial system acts with transparency and ratifies the victory of the Waorani people!
