  • A look inside #CanonExplorerOfLight @photospice's #camerabag: "As a photojournalist, my assignments range from covering protests, natural disasters, working in conflict zones, crime scenes, press conferences, fires, portraits, political campaigns, to every day feature stories. The assignment I’m covering will dictate what gear I pack.

I’m a candyholic, so no matter what I’m covering I cram a pack of sour patch candies into the side pocket of my camera bag… they are so good!

If I’m covering spot news, I use my 100-400mm lens. In LA, where I’m based, the LAPD seal off a crime scene –sometimes blocks away from where the violence occurred- so I need a powerful zoom to make the picture. It’s a light lens and easy to carry around. I also like to work with it for sports feature stories. It’s what we call a ‘street sweeper’ because of its varied focal lengths.

If I’m working on stories where I want to convey an intimate point of you I use prime lenses - a 24, 35 or 50mm. I photograph full frame so when I’m using a 24mm, or 35mm, I’m close to the subject which captures emotions authentically. I also like the aesthetic of a wide-open f-stop on prime lens.

I like to use one camera when I’m working - it keeps the weight down and helps me navigate a story a little more incognito. A lot of my work is editorial and I’m often photographing people in distress so I approach scenes delicately… I try not to be an intimidating force.

My 5D Mark IV’s are my assignment go-to cameras. They are extraordinary in low light conditions and since I rarely use artificial light I need a camera that offers crisp files in poor lighting situations. When I’m using it for video, my go to lens is the 24-105mm. It has such a lovely versatility and it allows me to get most of the shots I need. My 85mm f/1.4L IS USM lens is my portrait lens – it’s sharp and doesn’t distort the subjects’ features.

I always carry a portable hard drive and extra flashcards that I keep in my trusted Westie pink purse. In the trunk of my car I have protective goggles and a helmet in case I’m covering a violent protest. I also pack a notebook, fountain pen, flashlight, and passport - my travel docs to cover the world”

  • #BehindTheShot with #CanonExplorerOfLight @dorn.bruce: "When setting out to create a cinematic scene, I always start with a little PIE 🤪

Preparation. Imagination. Execution.

Prepare: Scout for a good location, gather interesting props, and assemble a great team.
Ideate: Use imagination and the elements of Step 1 to inspire an intriguing concept.
Execute: With a solid concept in mind, create an interesting character.
In this instance the availability of a beautiful long-range biplane inspired thoughts of travel into the unknown. Those thoughts, in turn, inspired me to pay homage to the bold and famous female flyers Beryl Markham and Amelia Earhart. Sharing this concept with my model and cosmetics team led to the development of a strong and striking-looking adventuress.

Solid prep, an imaginative scenario, and creative execution makes for a great result. And, seriously - who doesn’t like PIE?!? Follow my feed for more tasty photographic recipes @dorn.bruce"
