  • I don’t fuck with King Princess.
As in, i don’t fuck with her music.
As in, the music of King Princess is so wonderfully unique and in a world of its own that i don’t touch it.
we’ve both figured out she’s better off having me as the label, cheerleader, occasional bouncing board, drum mic’er etc.. anyway.
and it’s not for lack of trying.
in the early days, we tried a couple of sessions.
for some reason, it just didn’t work. maybe we’re both too stubborn, maybe we do too
much of the same thing. doesn’t matter, we just figured out our dynamic early.
doesn’t mean i don’t love her or her music any less.
i just keep off the grass.
(she does not keep off the grass btw, big doinks etc...) i knew i needed her on Late Night Feelings tho
so we tried a couple sessions. maybe more than a couple.
i would say at least 5 songs were written en route to Pieces of Us.
they weren’t bad, but they weren’t special. and i needed it to give me the feeling.
the emo-tinged, sad banger thing— like when she sings “did you mean it when you said i was pretty?” on 1950.
so we were all out in Shangri-La studios and me, Lykke and Ilsey were working in the main studio
and her and mike were down in the little shed studio working on some ideas.
see, King Princess is a little too talented. with her knowledge of chords, melodic gifts, and ableton prowess, she can fire up a
decent tune in 15 minutes.
so every 15 minutes, she’d hike up the hill to the main house and play me a new song idea.
looking at with me with a touch of excitement, eagerness which would quickly turn to mild annoyance when i told her
it wasn’t quite the thing yet.
and then she’d head back down the hill, more annoyed and go back to the drawing board.

you see, i love Mikaela/KP and she was guaranteed a spot on the album next to miley, angel, yebba etc… no matter what, but i wanted her to steal the show a little too. she’s the queen/king of my label, @zeligwest. there’s something at stake here.

back to that night…so this might have happened two or three more times that night, her marching up the hill, new song in tow. me like, “more heartbreak!”
finally, she came back with the first verse and chorus of “pieces of us”—her...

  • kevin parker is a friend of mine. he’s also one of my favourite music makers of the past twenty years.
it can be weird to hang out and be friends with someone whose music you listen to so much. music you might
listen to when you’re sad, joyous or just need something to get you through that boring af last 4 mins on the treadmill.
and then after all that, you’re just hanging out a couple days later with your mate, Kev.
i guess at the end of the day, i make music. i’m around people who make music. some of them have superpowers.
whatever and ever, amen etc…. me and kevin were working on some music a few summers ago. There was a dope ass song with @sza we never got to
finish (but u can probably find it on the web cause of a stolen hard drive 😟) and a demo called “Laurie”—which had a very very memorable, bittersweet melody with no lyrics only mumbles. and the real moment of glory was
a minor to major key modulation in the pre-chorus (which became “and now the tears in your eyes…”) that made my hairs stand up every single time it happened. the genius of kevin parker who channels so much r&b influence in his music, to me, it could have been an 80’s Janet chord change. to him, it’s just what comes out.

by the time i realized i was making a heartbreak album, i emailed Kevin and said “hey, are u using this for the new tame album? if not, can i try and finish it?”
i had to ask him because when i was making uptown special, there was a cute, comic moment when he sent me a demo to maybe fuck with and then asked for it back a couple weeks later. and that song became “i’m a man”… all good, i was more than happy with “daffodils”. anyway, the melody was so fucking good. the sadness, the triumph, the soul, the emo. i knew i had to turn it into something. but the song had no structure, just a bunch of good parts. as usual, i tried 80 fucking drumbeats til i got a good feel for it. and sat on this demo for a minute…

a couple months later, on the way to the airport in NY, i was listening to the radio in z-100, hoping to catch a spin “electricity” (shout out @dualipa, @diplo)—it was just starting to get burn— and “never be the same” came on and i was like “THAT IS OUR VOICE!!!”

  • “don’t leave me lonely” is probably the emotional centrepoint of “Late Night Feelings”
when @yebbasmith walked into @electricladystudios on our first meeting one afternoon in November and first let that chorus melody rip,
Andrew Wyatt and i could feel the molecules in the room shifting.
it was so powerful and yearning, filled with so much feeling - both heartbreaking and uplifting.
maybe one of the most special choruses i’ve ever had a part in.

when i have a chorus of a song that truly feels that special,
what usually follows is months and months of painstaking hours in the studio, getting the beat, arrangement, strings, instrumentation and every single other thing perfect until the track is truly worthy of the song. and of course, it’s never perfect but, man, do we try.
Yebba sung her ass off. cutting and recutting the vocals countless times. i spent hundreds of hours on it with a number of wonderful producers who i respect so very much (including my best friend James Sheffield Dewees aka Blu Jemz, rest in peace) until i finally decided to go to London to sit in a room with @jae5 (i was a big fan of his work with J Hus) til we got that syncopation exactly right. and then rosie danvers added a string arrangement that made the last choruses truly sing.
and here it is, my first (hopefully, of many) collaborations with one of the most gifted singers i’ve ever recorded.
with love and heartache,
mark
