  • Thank you everyone for overwhelming amount of thoughtful and detailed responses to my last post. Honestly, I have an incredibly hard time interacting with social media. It has now become a gyre of likes, comments, reactions, engagement, selling things, perception, momentum, that all seem unnecessarily pinned to the vitality of one’s photography and filmmaking, much to my chagrin. I am a private person in my opinions, personal life, and everything in between - I sometimes have a hard enough time sharing my own work, let alone wondering what sharing myself beyond a photo or video might do to manipulate viewing it… like a boisterous person greeting you at the entrance of an museum, in my mind it’s not what you want to set the experience. I’m calculating how I’m going to find a balance moving forward. Building off that, do you want behind the scenes photos? Opinions on environmentalism? Photography? Career and adventure? Or do you like a clean presentation of just the content I make, disturbed not by me trying to overshare myself or change your mind on anything? Who do you think does it best? I’m open to anything, I’m learning.

  • Luck, fate, fortune... whatever you may call it, i was born into a life on the beach and in the sea. My parents fostered it to be the backbone of my life and my passions, while my current career allows me to explore the world by documenting it. and yet, on a quick trip to Indonesia not long ago, this is what i collected walking in a straight line from the car park to the water’s edge, in ~50 meters. And this isn’t just indonesia, this is everywhere. My home beach in Santa Barbara, the pristine Maldives, deserted atolls in the south Pacific, little rivermouths deep in mexico. I just got back from a weekend trip the Channel Islands, my mecca, my holy place... and while i am on a high from that sliver of paradise, it makes me only realize that i am not stepping up to the plate to do my very best to protect what i love, for the animals now and their offspring and my children and this brilliant little planet we call home. Friends of instagram, help me. who is kicking ass? who is inspiring you? who can i learn from? what are you doing? what concepts and optimistic efforts are you admiring? share anything in the comments, from an inspirational person to NGO that’s doing something you respect. i need to be a better person, do more to activate the tools i’ve been bestowed with. and to all doing their part, big and small... thank you. 🙏🏼

  • this evening is was one of the most exceptional moments i’ve ever had in the sea. the whole sky exploded with color, the water was so oily and still, lightning flicked silently in the distance... i felt silly with a camera in my hand, trying to do it justice. truly sublime.

When i was 19, i entered this contest and was fortunate enough to receive the grant. Words cannot describe how many doors it opened and the avalanche affect of opportunity it created; it really was the jumpstart of my career. The submission deadline is May 31st, and you can find out more on their website and instagram account @followthelightfoundation 🔥
