  • There are about 30 people on board this flight from Anchorage to Valdez. The noise from the engine and props is so loud, I have no idea what the stewardess is saying, but it doesn't matter. I am completely distracted by the view anyways. I can't stop taking pictures and looking out the window. Crevasses and glaciers cover the landscape. I've never seen mountains like this in my life. We fly over multiple mountain ranges and inlets. The dark rocky terrain and iceberg freckled ocean below look like a painting. In the distance, the mountainous scenery fades into the sea. I took this shot on my way into Valdez last week. The small two prop plane, or puddle-jumper as some call it, felt a little sketch, but any fear I had was masked by the clear day and beautiful views. #kavudays

  • It's one of my last days in Alaska. I'm sitting on the bow of the Andy Sea and realizing just how wild Alaska still is. A sea plane flys overhead. Waves gently tap the shoreline. A flock of seagulls harass sea lions in front of the boat. The lions surface, cocking their heads back and swallowing salmon whole. The gulls bob up and down in the water, hoping they might get some dinner leftovers. A couple bald eagles fly by. I'm surrounded by steep forested mountainsides. Clouds cover the peaks around the boat and veil massive frozen glaciers. They slowly creep forward and feed the sea. I feel like I'm surrounded by hidden giants. It's my last day in Alaska and I'm a bit bummed. The rocking of the boat and sounds of the ocean have become familiar and comfortable. Land doesn't sound as appealing as the boat anymore and I feel so incredibly lucky to have experienced all this. #kavudays

  • I've been up since 6:00 AM. It's now midnight. Salmon are still jumping. A few seals are swimming around. I hear seagulls and the hum of boat engines in the distance. The sun has been setting for hours now and I can't sleep because the light just keeps getting better and better. Such an incredible day.

  • Throw back to finding a tropical beach in Idaho. One of my favorite places I've visited this summer. Bear Lake, ID.

Each time I visit Colombia, I am lucky to explore something new. I learn about myself and my family. For me, every moment is precious. This time I got to visit more of the countryside outside of Manizales. The scenery was spectacular, but the coolest part was getting to spend time with my Tio and learn how ranches in this subtropical high altitude climate operate.

  • I took this photo last week while visiting La Primavera Finca with my Tio in Colombia. This ranch sits on a lush mountainside just below the Páramo. The Páramo is a unique ecosystem only found at high elevations in the Andes Mountains. In this photo, it's hidden behind the clouds. I've visited the Páramo before and my dad has told me about it many times, but I didn't realize how unique it was. The ecosystem acts like a sponge, collecting water from clouds and fog, storing it in vegetation, and then releasing it into the lowlands. Fuzzy tall cactus-like plants absorb moisture as clouds pass by. Just like how we depend on snowmelt in the states, millions of Colombians depend on this natural system as a water source. Recent research from the University of Columbia has found that just like the arctic, temperatures in the Páramos are warming. I can't wait to go back and learn more about this.

  • It is within darkness sometimes we find the most brilliant light. I probably saw over a dozen rainbows while I was in Colombia. Each of them reminded me of the beauty that comes after a storm.

  • When someone passes away people tell you their memory lives on. I didn't really understand this saying for awhile. This week I finally learned what that means. Your love lives on in all of these people. Pretty amazing to fly with you today. Thanks for putting this on @turquoise.sparrow and to all the people that came out to fly. These were some of the hardest pictures I've ever taken, but by far the most meaningful. Love you Mark.

  • An image from a previous trip to Colombia when I was able visit some coffee farms "fincas" outside of Manizales. I'm so excited to be back there in just a few weeks to hang out with family and work on more photo projects.
